Tips For Keeping Your Tree Beautiful Through The Season

  • If you selected your tree on a very cold day, before bringing it into the house, put the trunk in water and keep it in an unheated area protected from wind and sun for a day.  This gives it time to adjust to the extreme temperature change.
  • Once ready to set up your tree, make a straight cut 1/2" off the entire length of the trunk, giving it a fresh cut.  Place in a sturdy stand that can hold a gallon or more of water.
  • Within the first 24 hours a tree can absorb a gallon or more of water.  Make sure the bottom of the trunk is covered with water at all times.  If the bottom of the trunk is not constantly covered with water a seal of sap can form preventing the tree from further absorbing water.  If this happens, the base will need to be recut and re-immersed in water.
  • To help prevent your tree from drying out, locate it away from heat and drafts, such as direct sunlight, radiators, air vents or fireplaces.
  • When decorating your tree, never overload electrical circuits and make sure all light strings and cords are in good working order.  Do not use strings with missing bulbs, frayed wires, or exposed insulation.  Unplug lights when going to bed or leaving the house.
  • Do not burn your tree in a wood burning fireplace or stove.  Sap from the trees can coat the stack and cause combustion higher in the chimney.
  • ENJOY!

Did You Know?

To get a traditional conical shape, a tree must be trimmed every year.

After trimming, a typical Christmas tree will only be 12”-18” taller than it was the prior year.

When a tree is cut, more than half of its weight is water.

Drilling a hole in the base of the tree will not increase water absorption.

The temperature of the water in the tree stand will not affect absorption.  However, hot water is not recommended.
